A detailed genre painting by Julius LeBlanc Stewart capturing a formal post-hunt gathering of the late nineteenth-century elite in Paris.
Julius LeBlanc Stewart, an American expatriate based in Paris, captured the social rituals of the late nineteenth-century elite with precision. In The Hunt Supper, completed in 1888, the artist depicts a lavish post-hunt gathering. The scene is set within a grand interior, where men in traditional scarlet hunting coats mingle with women in formal evening attire. The composition manages a large number of figures, creating a sense of movement and social interaction typical of the period.
Stewart was known for his ability to render textures, from the heavy wool of the hunting jackets to the delicate silk and lace of the gowns. The lighting, provided by chandeliers and warm ambient sources, creates a soft glow across the room, softening the edges of the figures and the architectural details. The painting functions as a record of the customs and fashion of the international social set that frequented Paris during the Belle Époque.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on more austere subjects, Stewart leaned into the spectacle of high society. His work often features a high degree of finish, with careful attention paid to the interplay of light and shadow across the crowded room. The figures are arranged in small, conversational groups, suggesting a narrative of social exchange. The painting remains a primary example of the genre work produced by American artists working in France during the late nineteenth century, documenting the specific aesthetic and social codes of the era.
