Descripción
A seminal work of early Surrealism, this 1921 painting by Max Ernst features a mechanical, elephant-like creature in a dreamlike, desolate setting.
The Elephant Celebes, painted by Max Ernst in 1921, occupies a distinct position within the early development of Surrealism. Ernst, a German artist who moved to Paris shortly after this work was completed, utilised a collage-like approach to assemble disparate, dreamlike imagery. The central figure is a massive, boiler-like mechanical creature that resembles an elephant. Its body is constructed from a grain storage bin, while its trunk is a long, flexible tube. A bull-like head is attached to the side, and a white, serrated collar adorns the trunk.
To the right, a headless female figure stands with one arm raised, creating a jarring contrast with the industrial, heavy form of the central creature. The background is a sparse, desolate space, rendered with a muted palette that suggests a dreamscape or an alien environment. Small, fish-like shapes float in the upper left, adding to the sense of irrationality. The title itself is derived from a German schoolboy rhyme, which Ernst recalled during the creation of the work.
This painting demonstrates the artist's interest in the juxtaposition of unrelated objects to provoke a psychological response. By combining mechanical components with organic forms, Ernst creates a sense of unease and curiosity. The composition is deliberately flat, rejecting traditional perspective to emphasise the absurdity of the subjects. The work remains a primary example of how early twentieth-century artists sought to bypass rational thought, instead tapping into the subconscious mind to generate imagery that defies conventional logic. The technical execution, with its smooth surfaces and precise lines, gives the impossible scene a strange, tangible reality.

Artist Biography
Max Ernst
He was born in Brühl, near Cologne, and studied philosophy and art history at the University of Bonn. He had no formal art training. He saw a Picasso exhibition, joined the Rhineland Expressionists, served in the German army during the First World War (artillery), and emerged with what he described as a compulsion to find something beyond rational thought. Dada gave him the method. Surrealism gave him the framework.
His collage novels, made from cut-up Victorian engravings reassembled into dreamlike narratives, are among the most original works of the twentieth century. Une Semaine de Bonte (A Week of Kindness, 1934) is a series of 182 collages arranged in five chapters, each associated with an element and a day of the week. The imagery is violent, erotic, and funny. The source material, melodramatic Victorian illustrations, is treated with deadpan seriousness.
He married four times. His second wife was Peggy Guggenheim (briefly). His fourth was the painter Dorothea Tanning. He moved to America during the war, lived in Sedona, Arizona, and then returned to France. He died in Paris in 1976, the night before his eighty-fifth birthday.
