A fine art print of Raphael's 1507 masterpiece, The Deposition, capturing the emotional weight and technical precision of the High Renaissance.
The Deposition, also known as the Baglioni Altarpiece, is a significant work from Raphael's Florentine period. Commissioned by Atalanta Baglioni for the family chapel in the church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia, the painting depicts the body of Christ being carried to the tomb. Raphael synthesises various influences here, drawing upon the anatomical precision of Michelangelo and the compositional balance characteristic of his own style.
The composition is organised around the physical weight of Christ's body, which is supported by two men. To the left, the Virgin Mary faints, surrounded by the holy women who rush to assist her. This dual focus creates a dynamic tension between the central action of the burial and the emotional reaction of the mourners. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner across the foreground, while the background offers a view of the hill of Golgotha, where the three crosses remain visible against the sky.
Raphael employs a clear, bright palette, which was a departure from the darker tones often associated with the subject of the Lamentation. The muscular definition of the figures, particularly the man carrying Christ's legs, demonstrates the artist's study of classical sculpture and contemporary anatomical drawings. The painting remains a primary example of the High Renaissance approach to narrative clarity and human emotion. It is currently held in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, having been moved there in the early seventeenth century. This print captures the precise draughtsmanship and the balanced distribution of light that define Raphael's approach to complex multi-figure compositions.
