Descripción
A classical Baroque history painting by Nicolas Poussin, depicting the biblical narrative of the judgement of Sapphira within a structured architectural setting.
Nicolas Poussin painted The Death of Sapphira in 1652, drawing upon the biblical narrative found in the Acts of the Apostles. The scene depicts the immediate aftermath of the divine judgement passed upon Sapphira, who falls to the ground after being confronted by Saint Peter. Poussin organises the composition with a clear, rational structure, placing the figures within a classical architectural setting that reflects his interest in Roman antiquity and the works of Raphael.
The painting is divided into two distinct groups. On the right, Saint Peter stands with an authoritative gesture, his arm extended towards the fallen woman. He is accompanied by other apostles, their expressions conveying a sense of solemnity and moral weight. On the left, the focus shifts to the human reaction: onlookers and family members gather around the collapsed figure of Sapphira. Their poses are varied, capturing a range of emotions from shock to grief, yet they remain contained within the measured, theatrical space Poussin favoured.
The colour palette is carefully balanced, with the deep reds and ochres of the drapery providing a sense of gravity. The light is clear and even, illuminating the figures against the backdrop of a structured, urban environment. Poussin avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring to focus on the clarity of the narrative and the psychological interaction between the characters. The geometric precision of the floor tiles and the receding buildings in the background guide the eye through the scene, maintaining a sense of order that is characteristic of his mature style. This work demonstrates his ability to translate complex theological themes into a visual language that is both readable and emotionally resonant, without relying on superfluous detail.

The Death of Sapphira - Nicolas Poussin
Artist Biography
Nicolas Poussin
Poussin's artistic vision was rooted in order, reason, and harmony. Unlike the dramatic flair of the Baroque, Poussin sought clarity and balance in his paintings. His meticulously planned compositions, populated with figures inspired by ancient sculpture, evoke a sense of timelessness and moral virtue. Key works like "The Death of Germanicus" and "The Rape of the Sabine Women" exemplify his dedication to historical and mythological subjects, rendered with a controlled palette and precise draughtsmanship.
Although he spent a significant portion of his career in Rome, Poussin's influence on French art was profound. He became a touchstone for generations of artists seeking to emulate his intellectual approach and classical ideals. His legacy extends beyond individual paintings; it encompasses a philosophy of art that values intellect, order, and the pursuit of ideal beauty. Poussin died in Rome in 1665, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire awe and intellectual engagement.
