A stark, emotive lithograph from Ernst Barlach's 1916 series, exploring themes of mortality and human struggle through raw, expressive linework.
Ernst Barlach produced this lithograph as part of his series titled 'Der Totentanz' (The Dance of the Dead) in 1916. The work reflects the artist's preoccupation with human suffering and mortality, themes that gained urgency during the First World War. Barlach, known for his sculptural approach to form, translates his interest in volume and weight into the two-dimensional medium of lithography through heavy, gestural mark-making.
The composition depicts a skeletal figure, a traditional personification of death, interacting with a living subject in a graveyard setting. The figure on the right leans forward with an angular, strained posture, reaching towards the grave markers. The background features a stark brick wall and a dark, arched opening, which creates a sense of enclosure and unease. Barlach employs a rough, charcoal-like texture to define the figures and the environment, avoiding smooth transitions in favour of raw, emotive strokes.
This print captures the grim, existential atmosphere characteristic of Barlach's graphic work. The interaction between the living and the dead is rendered without sentimentality, focusing instead on the physical tension of the scene. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner, consistent with his practice of signing his limited edition prints. This piece offers a direct look into the anxieties of the early twentieth century, presented through the lens of a traditional medieval motif reimagined for a modern, fractured era.
