A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Ryūkōsai Jokei, depicting a courtesan dressed in the rustic attire of an Ohara maiden.
This woodblock print by Ryūkōsai Jokei depicts the courtesan Umematsu, associated with the Atarashiya brothel, dressed in the guise of an Ohara maiden. The Ohara maidens were women from the village of Ohara, located north of Kyoto, who were known for carrying bundles of firewood or charcoal on their heads to sell in the city. This type of theatrical or playful costume, known as 'mitate', was a popular subject in Ukiyo-e art. It allowed artists to place well-known figures from the pleasure quarters into different social roles, creating a visual narrative that appealed to the urban audience of the Edo period.
Ryūkōsai Jokei was a practitioner of the Kamigata school, based in the Osaka and Kyoto region. His work often focuses on actors and figures from the pleasure districts, rendered with a distinct linear quality. The figure is shown in profile, balancing a large, rounded bundle on her head. Her kimono features a bold, grid-like pattern, which contrasts with the softer, striped fabric of her obi and the flowing lines of her sleeves. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the figure against a plain background, which is characteristic of the period's aesthetic preferences for clarity and focus on the subject's pose and costume.
The print exhibits the subtle colour palette typical of late eighteenth-century Japanese woodblock printing, where muted tones of ochre and soft black ink dominate. The lines are precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the courtesan. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural intersections of the Edo period, where the lives of high-ranking courtesans were frequently romanticised and reimagined through the lens of traditional rural labour.
