A serene marine view of the Italian coast by William Collins, capturing the calm waters and rugged cliffs of Sorrento in soft, atmospheric light.
William Collins, a member of the Royal Academy, travelled to Italy in 1836, seeking relief from health issues and fresh inspiration for his work. During his stay in Naples, he produced several studies of the coastline, including this depiction of the Caves of Ulysses at Sorrento. The painting captures the calm, expansive atmosphere of the Mediterranean, focusing on the interplay between the rugged, sun-drenched cliffs and the tranquil water.
In this composition, Collins employs a soft, atmospheric palette to render the hazy light characteristic of the Italian coast. The foreground features small fishing boats, which provide a sense of scale against the imposing rock formations. The artist demonstrates his technical skill in the handling of water reflections, where the muted blues and greens of the sea meet the warm, earthy tones of the shore. Unlike his earlier, more narrative-driven genre scenes of English rural life, this work reflects the influence of his continental travels, showing a shift towards a more observational approach to light and atmosphere.
The painting is a fine example of the nineteenth-century British fascination with the Italian coast, a destination that offered both historical resonance and aesthetic beauty. Collins avoids overly dramatic effects, opting instead for a balanced, serene view that invites quiet contemplation. The inclusion of the small figures in the boats adds a human element to the vastness of the scene, grounding the composition without distracting from the geological features of the Sorrento cliffs. This print reproduces the subtle gradations of the original oil painting, preserving the delicate balance of tone and colour that defines Collins's later work.
