A detailed 1868 portrait by Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt, depicting his wife, Edith, in a black gown with a peacock-feather shawl.
William Holman Hunt painted this portrait of his second wife, Edith Waugh, in 1868. The work captures Edith in a moment of quiet reflection, dressed in a black gown adorned with a shawl featuring iridescent peacock feathers. Her attire is completed by a red velvet headband and a matching set of coral beads, which echo the colour of the roses held in her left hand. The composition is typical of Hunt's meticulous approach, where every texture, from the soft fur trim to the metallic sheen of the feathers, is rendered with precise attention to detail.
Edith Waugh was the sister of Hunt's first wife, Fanny, who died in childbirth. The marriage between Hunt and Edith was controversial at the time, as British law prohibited a man from marrying his deceased wife's sister. This necessitated their travel to Neuchâtel, Switzerland, for the wedding ceremony. The painting reflects the personal nature of their bond, presenting Edith not merely as a subject, but as a figure of domestic grace. The objects she holds, including a small fan and a pocket watch, suggest a narrative of time and personal celebration, fitting for the title of the work.
Hunt was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group that sought to return to the clarity and sincerity of art produced before the influence of Raphael. This portrait demonstrates the movement's focus on naturalism and the use of bright, clear colours. The background, composed of heavy, patterned drapery, provides a sense of depth while ensuring the focus remains on the sitter. The painting is a fine example of the Victorian interest in symbolic portraiture, where personal items and clothing serve to communicate the character and circumstances of the individual depicted.
