An atmospheric book illustration by Florence Harrison from 1910, featuring a woodland encounter rendered in ink and watercolour.
This illustration originates from the 1910 publication Fairies I Have Met, written by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell. Florence Harrison, a British artist associated with the late Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements, produced a series of plates for this volume that demonstrate her command of line and atmospheric colour. The composition depicts a cloaked, elderly figure with a long beard interacting with a younger person, set against the gnarled, textured bark of a large tree. Harrison employs a muted palette, relying on earthy browns, deep greens, and soft ochres to establish a sense of woodland mystery. Her style is defined by a decorative approach to form, where the organic shapes of the tree and the drapery of the figures are unified through fluid, calligraphic outlines.
Harrison was active during the early twentieth century, a period when the tradition of the illustrated gift book reached a high point in British publishing. Her work often features ethereal subjects, drawing upon folklore and fairy tales. In this specific plate, the interaction between the characters is framed by the natural environment, which serves as both a backdrop and a narrative element. The artist balances the weight of the dark, heavy robes of the elder figure with the lighter, more delicate presence of the youth. The application of watercolour allows for subtle gradients, particularly in the rendering of the tree trunk and the distant, hazy horizon. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the Edwardian era, where the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement remained present in the attention to detail and the integration of text and image. The work remains a representative example of Harrison's contribution to the golden age of British book illustration.
