A haunting illustration by Edmund Dulac for Edgar Allan Poe's poem, The Bells, featuring ethereal figures and atmospheric ironwork.
Edmund Dulac produced this illustration for a 1912 edition of Edgar Allan Poe's poem, The Bells. The work demonstrates his mastery of the watercolour medium, employing a delicate layering technique that creates a dreamlike atmosphere. Dulac, a central figure in the early twentieth-century British illustration scene, often drew upon Symbolist influences and the aesthetic traditions of the Orient to construct his visual narratives.
The composition features a group of ethereal, winged figures ascending towards the upper reaches of the frame. Their faces are turned upward, suggesting a collective gaze toward a celestial source. Below them, a dark, wrought-iron structure frames a pale moon, providing a stark contrast to the soft, muted tones of the figures above. The ironwork exhibits a rhythmic, curvilinear quality that echoes the flowing drapery and wings of the figures. Dulac uses a palette dominated by deep purples, soft blues, and muted golds, which contributes to the melancholic and mystical mood inherent in Poe's text.
Dulac's approach to this illustration avoids literal representation, opting instead for a mood-driven interpretation of the poem's auditory imagery. The figures appear weightless, their forms blending into the surrounding atmosphere. This work reflects the artist's ability to synthesise literary themes with a highly decorative visual language. The attention to detail in the ironwork, combined with the fluid rendering of the figures, captures the transition between the physical world and the imaginative realm. As a piece of book illustration, it functions as a visual accompaniment to the rhythmic cadence of the poem, providing a quiet, contemplative space for the reader.
