A precise graphite study of the ancient Aqua Claudia ruins in the Roman Campagna by Dutch artist Hendrik Voogd.
This graphite study by the Dutch artist Hendrik Voogd captures the Roman Campagna, a subject that occupied many artists during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Voogd, who spent the majority of his career in Rome, became known for his precise observations of the Italian countryside. This drawing depicts the ruins of the Aqua Claudia, an ancient Roman aqueduct that stretched across the plains towards the Alban Hills.
The composition is structured by a foreground fence, which provides a sense of scale and distance before the eye travels to the massive stone arches. Voogd uses light, controlled pencil strokes to define the weathered texture of the masonry and the rolling contours of the distant mountains. The work reflects the period interest in classical antiquity and the physical remains of the Roman Empire, often documented by artists on the Grand Tour or those residing in the city as expatriates.
Unlike his more finished oil paintings, this drawing reveals the artist's process of recording the topography of the region. The open space of the plain is rendered with minimal detail, allowing the architectural remnants to dominate the view. The sketch serves as a quiet observation of the intersection between human engineering and the natural environment. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece. It is a clear example of the academic approach to drawing that defined the training of artists in the early nineteenth century, prioritising clarity of form and accurate spatial representation over expressive mark-making.
