Descripción
A classic woodblock print from Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, featuring the Tama River and the iconic mountain peak in a serene, blue-toned composition.
This woodblock print is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that established Hokusai as a master of the genre. The composition depicts the Tama River, which flows through the Musashi Province, with the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rising in the distance. Hokusai employs a clear, horizontal structure to separate the foreground, middle ground, and background, creating a sense of distance and scale.
In the foreground, a traveller leads a horse along the riverbank, while a small boat navigates the water. The artist uses a limited palette, dominated by Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan. This choice of colour provides a cool, atmospheric quality to the water and the sky, contrasting with the neutral tones of the riverbank and the white peak of the mountain. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the high-quality carving required for such prints.
The series was produced during a period when travel within Japan was becoming more popular among the merchant class. Hokusai captures the intersection of human activity and the natural environment. The inclusion of the horse and the boat provides a sense of scale, grounding the monumental presence of the mountain in the daily life of the region. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hokusai, particularly in the subtle gradations of blue in the sky and the water. This work remains a clear example of the aesthetic principles of the Edo period, where the observation of nature was balanced with formal composition and graphic clarity.
