A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Pieter Nolpe depicting the historical alliance between Adolf of Nassau and Edward I of England.
This etching by Pieter Nolpe depicts a formalised historical scene, specifically a tableau vivant representing the alliance formed in 1294 between Adolf of Nassau, King of the Romans, and Edward I of England. The composition is structured with a central figure seated upon a throne, surrounded by courtiers and attendants in period dress. The artist employs precise line work to define the textures of the garments, the architectural elements, and the atmospheric clouds above, from which a hand emerges to signify the divine sanction of the pact.
Nolpe, a Dutch engraver and printmaker active in Amsterdam, was known for his technical proficiency in etching. This work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in historical narrative and political allegory. The scene is framed by classical columns, creating a stage-like environment that emphasises the theatrical nature of the tableau. Below the image, Latin text provides context for the historical figures and the nature of their diplomatic agreement, a common feature in prints of this era intended for scholarly or commemorative collections.
The visual arrangement balances the static nature of the seated monarch with the dynamic poses of the surrounding figures. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, directs the viewer's eye toward the central interaction. The inclusion of heraldic shields and weaponry serves to ground the scene in its medieval context, despite the stylistic conventions of the Dutch Golden Age. This print offers a window into how seventeenth-century artists interpreted and visualised events from the distant past, blending historical record with the artistic sensibilities of their own time.
