A classic Northern Song Dynasty handscroll depicting a vast, atmospheric mountain scene with ink washes on silk.
Summer Mountains is a handscroll attributed to the Northern Song Dynasty painter Qu Ding. The work represents the shan shui tradition, which translates to mountain-water painting. It captures a vast, atmospheric scene where towering peaks dominate the composition, their forms softened by mist and the passage of time on the silk surface. The artist employs a range of ink washes to create depth, moving from the detailed foreground of trees and small buildings to the receding, hazy silhouettes of distant mountains.
In the lower sections, small figures and boats suggest human activity, providing a sense of scale against the monumental natural forms. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the technical rigour of the period. The composition follows a horizontal progression, allowing the viewer to travel through the scene as the scroll is unfurled. The muted palette, characteristic of aged silk and ink, contributes to the quiet, contemplative mood of the piece. Various seals and inscriptions appear on the surface, documenting the history of the scroll as it passed through different collections over the centuries.
This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink work. It offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the eleventh century, where the observation of nature was a primary concern for scholars and artists. The balance between the solid, imposing rock formations and the fluid, open spaces of water and sky creates a rhythmic visual experience. It is a classic example of the Northern Song style, focusing on the grandeur of the natural world and the place of humanity within it.
