A formal portrait of Sir Peyton Ventris by John Riley, capturing the judge in his official scarlet robes during the late seventeenth century.
This portrait by John Riley depicts Sir Peyton Ventris, a prominent English judge who served as a Justice of the Common Pleas. Riley, a London-born painter, gained recognition during the late seventeenth century for his ability to capture the likeness of the English gentry and aristocracy. His style often avoids the theatricality found in the works of his contemporaries, opting instead for a grounded, observational approach to his subjects.
In this composition, Ventris is shown in his official judicial robes. The scarlet fabric, trimmed with white fur, provides a stark contrast against the dark, muted background typical of the period. The artist focuses on the sitter's expression, which conveys a sense of professional gravity. The lighting is directed to illuminate the face and the hands, one of which rests upon a document, while the rest of the figure recedes into the shadows. This technique draws the viewer's attention to the sitter's features and the textures of his attire.
Riley was known for his work in the court of Charles II, James II, and William and Mary. His portraits provide a record of the political and legal figures of the era. This particular work demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in handling oil paint, particularly in the rendering of the heavy, folded fabric of the robes and the subtle modelling of the face. The portrait remains a representative example of late seventeenth-century British portraiture, reflecting the formal requirements of judicial iconography while maintaining a distinct individual character. The work is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London, where it is recognised for its historical documentation of the legal profession during the late Stuart period.
