This triptych by Chōbunsai Eishi presents a sophisticated interplay between the mundane and the ethereal. Originally a painter of the Kano school, Eishi transitioned to the Ukiyo-e tradition, where he became known for his depictions of courtesans from the Yoshiwara district. In this work, the artist employs a minimalist composition, leaving large areas of the silk ground empty to suggest space and atmosphere.

The imagery features small, delicate figures of women, rendered in the elongated style characteristic of Eishi, floating above arrangements of shellfish and floral elements. These figures appear as apparitions, connected to the objects below by faint, swirling wisps of smoke or vapour.
