A detailed 1664 etching by Jean Lepautre documenting the theatrical performances held at Versailles during the festivities of Les Plaisirs de l'Île Enchantée.
This etching by Jean Lepautre documents the elaborate festivities held at Versailles in 1664, known as Les Plaisirs de l'Île Enchantée. The print captures the second day of the celebrations, specifically the performance of Molière's comedy and ballet, La Princesse d'Élide. Lepautre, a prolific draughtsman and engraver, was instrumental in recording the ephemeral architecture and courtly spectacles commissioned by Louis XIV.
The composition is structured to emphasise the scale of the temporary theatre constructed within the gardens. The foreground is occupied by the courtly audience, rendered with precise attention to the period costumes and social hierarchy. The stage itself features a deep perspective, drawing the eye toward the manicured allées of the Versailles gardens, which serve as a natural backdrop for the performance. The proscenium arch is decorated with ornate motifs, including hanging chandeliers that provide illumination for the scene.
Lepautre employs a refined etching technique to differentiate between the textures of the foliage, the architectural elements of the stage, and the dense crowd of spectators. The work functions as a historical record of the Sun King's efforts to project power through cultural display. By documenting the temporary structures and the specific arrangement of the court, the print offers a glimpse into the intersection of theatre, garden design, and royal propaganda during the seventeenth century. The inclusion of the title and descriptive text at the base of the print follows the conventions of contemporary commemorative publications, ensuring the event remained fixed in the public consciousness long after the temporary stage was dismantled.
