An exquisite 17th-century Dutch engraving by writing master Cornelis Dircksz. Boissens, featuring elaborate calligraphic flourishes and historical text.
This engraving by Cornelis Dircksz. Boissens originates from a period when the art of penmanship was highly regarded in the Netherlands. Boissens was a writing master, and his work often appeared in copybooks intended to instruct students in the various scripts of the era. This specific plate features a prominent, flourished initial 'A' that anchors the text, demonstrating the technical control required for such elaborate pen-work. The surrounding flourishes, or 'paraphs', are executed with a precision that characterises the Dutch school of calligraphy during the early 17th century.
The text itself, written in French, recounts a historical anecdote regarding the Roman Emperor Hadrian. It serves as both a linguistic exercise and a display of typographic skill. The contrast between the dense, decorative flourishes and the smaller, legible body text illustrates the hierarchy of information common in early modern printed manuals. The composition is balanced, with the central text block providing a stable core for the expansive, swirling lines that extend into the margins.
As a piece of graphic design, this print captures the intersection of utility and ornament. The lines are thin and controlled, reflecting the physical movement of a quill on parchment, translated here into the medium of copperplate engraving. The work provides insight into the educational materials of the time, where the aesthetic quality of the script was considered as important as the content of the writing. The paper shows the natural ageing of a historical document, with subtle variations in tone that complement the stark black ink of the engraving. This print is a study in discipline and decorative form, suitable for those interested in the history of typography, graphic design, or the evolution of the written word.
