A detailed 1545 engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting Saint Paul addressing a group of listeners within a classical architectural setting.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone, dated 1545, depicts Saint Paul addressing a group of listeners. Bonasone, a Bolognese artist active during the sixteenth century, was known for his technical skill in printmaking, often reproducing works by contemporary masters or creating original compositions based on classical themes. The work is contained within an oval frame, a common device in Renaissance printmaking to focus the viewer on the central narrative.
Saint Paul stands on a raised platform, his right hand raised in a gesture of discourse. He is draped in heavy, classical robes, which allow the artist to demonstrate his command of line and shading. The listeners are positioned to the left, their postures suggesting attentive engagement. The architectural setting, featuring a prominent column, provides a sense of depth and stability to the scene. The cross-hatching and fine lines used throughout the print create a sense of volume in the figures and texture in the drapery.
Bonasone often collaborated with other artists, and this print reflects the influence of the Roman school of the period. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the column and the standing figure of Paul contrasting with the seated, clustered group of listeners. The print demonstrates the precision of the engraving technique, where the artist uses varying densities of lines to establish light and shadow. This work is a clear example of the mid-sixteenth-century Italian approach to narrative printmaking, where clarity of form and anatomical accuracy were prioritised. The inscription at the base of the platform identifies the artist and the date, a standard practice for prints of this era intended for circulation among collectors and students of art.
