A detailed sixteenth-century engraving of Saint James the Greater by Dutch artist Zacharias Dolendo, featuring precise line work and classic religious iconography.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Zacharias Dolendo depicts Saint James the Greater, identified by his traditional attributes: the pilgrim's staff and the scallop shells attached to his cloak. Dolendo, a skilled printmaker active in the late sixteenth century, demonstrates a mastery of the burin through the precise, rhythmic hatching used to model the saint's features and the heavy folds of his drapery. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a format common in series of apostles or saints produced during this period in the Netherlands.
The figure is rendered with the expressive intensity characteristic of Northern Mannerism. The saint's gaze is directed upward, his brow furrowed, and his hair and beard are depicted with swirling, energetic lines that suggest movement and emotional weight. The contrast between the deep shadows in the background and the illuminated surfaces of the face and hands creates a sense of volume and physical presence. The Latin inscription, S. IACOBVS APOST. DICTVS MAIOR, encircles the upper portion of the frame, identifying the subject clearly for the viewer.
Dolendo was associated with the printmaking circles of Leiden and worked in a style that reflects the influence of contemporary masters such as Hendrick Goltzius. His work often features this combination of technical rigour and dramatic, almost theatrical, characterisation. The inclusion of the number 3 at the base of the circular border suggests this print was part of a larger series, likely a set of the Twelve Apostles. This piece offers a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship found in late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking, where the medium was used to convey both theological narratives and stylistic sophistication through the manipulation of line and shadow.
