A detailed 1847 engraving by Paul Gleditsch after Carlo Dolci, depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria in a moment of scholarly reflection.
This engraving by Paul Gleditsch, completed in 1847, reproduces the composition of the Italian Baroque painter Carlo Dolci. The work depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria in a moment of quiet contemplation, her attention fixed upon an open book. The technical precision of the engraving captures the soft textures of her garments and the delicate rendering of her features, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship expected of nineteenth-century reproductive printmakers.
The composition follows the conventions of religious portraiture from the seventeenth century. Saint Catherine is shown in profile, seated before a table with a cushion that supports her reading material. A crown, symbolising her royal status and martyrdom, rests near the edge of the table. The background features a simple architectural setting with a glimpse of a distant landscape through an opening, providing a sense of depth without distracting from the primary figure. The chair, with its carved wooden frame and patterned upholstery, adds a layer of domestic detail to the scene.
This specific print was dedicated to King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, as indicated by the formal inscription at the base of the sheet. The inclusion of the royal coat of arms and the dedication text reflects the practice of presenting high-quality engravings to European monarchs and patrons of the arts during the mid-nineteenth century. The print was produced in Vienna, where Gleditsch was active as an engraver. The work provides an example of how historical paintings were disseminated to a wider audience through the medium of print, allowing collectors to own reproductions of works held in major European galleries. The monochromatic palette relies on a range of grey tones to define form and light, creating a balanced and harmonious visual experience.
