A meditative Symbolist work by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, depicting the archer of the zodiac aiming toward a celestial creature.
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a Lithuanian composer and painter, created this work as part of his Zodiac cycle. The image depicts the archer figure of Sagittarius positioned atop a craggy peak, aiming a bow towards the heavens. Above the figure, a large, dark bird-like form stretches across the sky, its wings containing a small cluster of stars. The composition relies on a vertical axis, connecting the terrestrial mountain to the celestial realm.
Čiurlionis often synthesised his musical training with his visual practice, treating his paintings with a sense of rhythm and harmonic structure. The colour palette is restrained, favouring muted greys, blues, and earthy browns that suggest a twilight atmosphere. The application of tempera allows for a soft, atmospheric quality, blurring the boundaries between the mountain and the sky. This approach creates a dreamlike state, typical of his Symbolist output.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on realism, Čiurlionis looked toward cosmic and mythological themes. The figure of the archer is reduced to a silhouette, removing specific human detail to focus on the action and the relationship with the cosmic entity above. The work avoids narrative clutter, opting instead for a singular, meditative focus. The star cluster embedded within the wings of the creature provides a subtle point of light, drawing the eye upward and reinforcing the astronomical theme of the zodiac. This piece reflects the artist's interest in the connection between human endeavour and the vast, mysterious nature of the universe, presented through a lens of quiet contemplation.
