A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a ceremonial procession of horsemen and standard-bearers in Bologna.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicts a formal procession of horsemen and standard-bearers. The work belongs to a series documenting the ceremonial entry of Emperor Charles V into Bologna for his coronation in 1530. Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active in the early sixteenth century, provides a detailed record of the military attire and heraldic displays common to the period.
The composition is organised as a frieze, moving the viewer's eye from left to right across the page. On the left, mounted figures in armour lead the group, their horses captured in mid-stride. To the right, a line of infantrymen carries large, billowing standards. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the metal armour, the folds of the fabric banners, and the musculature of the horses. The background remains largely empty, which directs full attention to the figures and their equipment.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision characteristic of Northern Renaissance graphic arts. The shading is achieved through parallel hatching, which creates volume without the need for complex cross-hatching. The Latin inscriptions at the bottom, 'MILITIAE DUCES' and 'VEXILLA COMMUNIS BONONIENSIS', identify the subjects as military leaders and the banners of the Bologna commune. This piece offers a clear view into the visual culture of sixteenth-century state pageantry. It functions as both a historical document and an example of the printmaking techniques used to disseminate news of royal events across Europe during the era.
