A serene ink and wash drawing by Jacob van Strij, capturing a tranquil river scene with atmospheric light and expressive, fluid brushwork.
This ink and wash drawing by Jacob van Strij captures a serene river scene, characteristic of the artist's focus on the Dutch countryside. Van Strij, working in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often drew inspiration from the masters of the Dutch Golden Age, particularly Aelbert Cuyp. His work frequently features atmospheric effects and a careful balance of light and shadow, which are evident in this composition.
The drawing employs a monochromatic palette to define the depth of the scene. A large, gnarled tree dominates the foreground, its branches rendered with expressive, fluid strokes that contrast with the softer, diffused light of the background. The river flows across the lower portion of the frame, with subtle washes suggesting the movement of water over rocks. In the distance, rolling hills and a faint suggestion of a settlement provide a sense of scale and perspective. The artist uses varying densities of ink wash to create a sense of volume in the foliage and to suggest the hazy quality of the sky.
Van Strij was a prominent figure in Dordrecht, where he and his brother Abraham ran a successful studio. Their work often appealed to collectors who admired the traditional Dutch approach to rural subjects. This piece demonstrates the technical proficiency of the artist in handling ink and wash, a medium that allows for both precise detail and broad, atmospheric tonal shifts. The composition is structured to lead the eye from the immediate foreground, through the river, and into the distant horizon, creating a cohesive and tranquil view of the natural world. It remains a fine example of the period's interest in the picturesque qualities of the Dutch environment, rendered with a focus on light and tonal harmony.
