A 1919 Dada assemblage by Kurt Schwitters, featuring geometric forms and found objects arranged in a mechanical, revolving composition.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, created Revolving in 1919. This work exemplifies his Merz practice, a term he coined to describe his method of assembling found objects into coherent compositions. By repurposing discarded materials, Schwitters challenged traditional notions of fine art, shifting the focus from academic technique to the arrangement of everyday debris.
The composition is dominated by circular forms and geometric lines, suggesting mechanical motion or industrial components. The surface features a muted palette of greens, blues, and earthy tones, applied with a painterly quality that softens the harshness of the metal and wood elements. The arrangement of these disparate parts creates a sense of balance, despite the unconventional nature of the materials used. The circular shapes appear to rotate within the frame, providing a kinetic energy that contrasts with the static nature of the board.
Schwitters often incorporated items salvaged from his immediate environment, reflecting the post-war climate of Germany. His work in this period demonstrates a move towards a more structured, geometric aesthetic, which would later influence the development of Constructivism. By integrating physical objects into the picture plane, he blurred the boundary between painting and sculpture. This piece remains a clear example of his ability to transform mundane refuse into a structured visual experience, inviting the viewer to consider the aesthetic potential of the discarded.
