A Neo-Primitivist work by Kazimir Malevich, featuring simplified figures and bold, flat colours in a rural setting.
Province (1910-1911) belongs to the Neo-Primitivist phase of Kazimir Malevich. During this period, the artist moved away from the influence of Impressionism and Fauvism, turning instead toward the simplified forms and bold, flat colours found in Russian folk art and icon painting. The composition depicts two figures walking through a rural setting, surrounded by simplified houses and foliage.
The figures are rendered with heavy, dark outlines and blocky shapes, which reduce human anatomy to essential, almost sculptural forms. The woman on the left carries a basket, while the figure on the right moves with a distinct, angular gait. Malevich employs a non-naturalistic colour palette, dominated by a bright, golden-yellow ground that flattens the pictorial space. This choice of colour creates a sense of warmth and rural simplicity, contrasting with the stark, dark silhouettes of the figures.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the rural life of the Russian countryside, a subject he approached with a deliberate lack of academic refinement. By stripping away detail, Malevich focuses on the rhythmic movement of the figures and the decorative potential of the scene. The houses in the background are reduced to basic geometric volumes, suggesting a village environment without providing specific architectural detail. The painting demonstrates the early stages of the artist's journey toward the total abstraction he would later develop through Suprematism. It remains a clear example of his transition from representational painting to a more conceptual approach, where the arrangement of colour and shape takes precedence over the accurate depiction of the physical world.
