A detailed lithograph by Gustave Adolphe Simonau depicting the 1832 assault on the Fort Saint-Laurent during the Siege of Antwerp.
This lithograph by Gustave Adolphe Simonau depicts the capture of the Saint-Laurent lunette during the Siege of the Citadel of Antwerp in December 1832. The work documents a specific episode of the Ten Days' Campaign, a conflict occurring during the Belgian Revolution. Simonau, a Belgian artist known for his topographical and historical prints, captures the chaotic atmosphere of the assault with technical precision.
The composition is divided into distinct zones of activity. In the foreground, French soldiers are positioned behind earthworks, with some figures attending to the wounded while others prepare for the next phase of the attack. The middle ground is obscured by thick plumes of smoke, which serve to separate the foreground infantry from the intense action occurring at the ramparts of the fort. In the distance, the silhouette of the city of Antwerp is visible, providing a sense of geographical context to the military engagement.
Simonau employs a delicate line quality typical of early nineteenth-century lithography. The shading is achieved through fine cross-hatching and stippling, which creates a sense of depth despite the monochromatic palette. The print serves as a visual record of the French intervention in the Netherlands, reflecting the political tensions of the era. The inclusion of the title and descriptive text at the bottom of the sheet follows the conventions of contemporary historical documentation, intended to inform the viewer of the specific military event. The work is a clear example of how lithography was utilised in the nineteenth century to disseminate news and historical narratives to a wider public, bridging the gap between fine art and journalistic reporting.
