A detailed etching portrait of the Flemish painter Willem Jacob Herreyns, executed by the monogrammist CH/VA.
This etching presents a portrait of the Flemish painter Willem Jacob Herreyns (1743-1827). The artist, known only by the monogram CH/VA, employs a precise linear technique characteristic of late eighteenth-century printmaking. The subject is depicted in a bust-length format, wearing a coat with a high collar and a cravat, reflecting the fashion of the period. The artist uses varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face and the texture of the clothing, creating a sense of volume without relying on heavy tonal washes.
Herreyns, a significant figure in the Antwerp art scene, is captured with a direct gaze. The composition is restrained, focusing on the character of the sitter. The monogram CH is visible near the shoulder, while the inscription A Nett appears on the lower right, providing a specific identification of the printmaker's hand. The background remains largely unworked, which directs the viewer's attention to the facial features and the careful rendering of the hair. This work belongs to a tradition of portrait prints that served to document the appearance of contemporary artists and intellectuals. The clarity of the line work suggests a high level of proficiency in the medium of etching, common among printmakers associated with the Antwerp Academy during this era. The print is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, serving as a record of the visual culture of the Low Countries at the turn of the nineteenth century.
