A formal nineteenth-century engraving of Adolf, Count of Nassau-Siegen, featuring his heraldic coat of arms and traditional military attire.
This engraving by J.F.C. Reckleben depicts Adolf, Count of Nassau-Siegen, a figure associated with the Dutch nobility. The portrait follows the conventions of historical printmaking, presenting the subject within an oval frame set against a textured background. The count is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a ruff collar and polished plate armour, which reflects the military status typical of aristocratic portraiture from this period.
Below the portrait, the composition includes a heraldic shield featuring the coat of arms of the House of Nassau. The inclusion of the family crest serves to identify the subject and reinforce his lineage. The engraving technique employs fine lines to model the facial features and the metallic sheen of the armour, demonstrating the technical precision expected of nineteenth-century printmakers. The overall presentation is formal and restrained, typical of the period's interest in documenting historical figures through reproduction prints.
Reckleben, a Dutch engraver, produced this work as part of a broader effort to catalogue and illustrate the lives of historical figures. The print is characterised by its clean lines and balanced composition, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to focus on the likeness and the heraldic symbols. The use of a stippled or cross-hatched background behind the oval portrait creates a subtle contrast, drawing the eye toward the subject. This piece is a representative example of the portrait engraving tradition, where the primary objective is the clear and accurate depiction of the sitter alongside their identifying emblems. It remains a useful document for those interested in the visual history of the Dutch nobility and the technical standards of early nineteenth-century print production.
