A formal 1797 portrait of the final Polish monarch, Stanisław August Poniatowski, painted by the French artist Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
This portrait depicts Stanisław August Poniatowski, the final monarch of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Painted by the French artist Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1797, the work captures the king during his period of exile in Saint Petersburg. Vigée Le Brun, who fled France during the Revolution, found significant patronage among the European aristocracy, including the Russian imperial court where the Polish king resided.
The composition follows the conventions of formal royal portraiture. The subject is presented in an oval format, wearing a dark velvet coat adorned with a sash and a heavy crimson mantle trimmed with white fur. His expression is composed and reflective, suggesting the weight of his political circumstances. Vigée Le Brun employs a soft, controlled brushwork that defines the textures of the fur and the sheen of the fabric. The lighting is directed to focus on the king's face, while the background remains a dark, neutral tone to ensure the figure remains the primary subject.
This painting is an example of the artist's ability to balance formal requirements with a degree of psychological observation. Vigée Le Brun was known for her skill in rendering the likenesses of her sitters while maintaining a sense of decorum appropriate for high-ranking individuals. The portrait provides a record of the king's appearance during his final years, offering a glimpse into the social circles of the late eighteenth-century European elite. The use of colour is restrained, relying on the contrast between the deep red of the mantle and the darker tones of the clothing to create a sense of authority and presence. The work remains a representative piece of the artist's career as an itinerant portraitist who moved through the courts of Europe.
