An eighteenth-century French engraving depicting the writer Germain-François Poullain de Saint-Foix, framed by allegorical motifs and symbols of literature.
This engraving by Noël Le Mire depicts the French writer and dramatist Germain-François Poullain de Saint-Foix. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century book illustrations and frontispieces. The subject wears the insignia of the Order of Saint Louis, reflecting his military background and social standing during the Ancien Régime.
Le Mire, a skilled engraver, employs precise line work to define the textures of the subject's wig, clothing, and the surrounding decorative elements. The composition extends beyond the central portrait, incorporating an allegorical base. A putto sits to the left, while symbols of literature and theatre, such as a mask and a quill, are arranged alongside a ship bearing the fleur-de-lis. These motifs suggest the intellectual and cultural pursuits of the sitter. The work is based on a design by Charles-Nicolas Cochin or a similar contemporary, with the ornamental frame attributed to the designer and publisher Panckoucke or his associates, such as Marillier, as noted in the lower margin.
The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of French printmaking during the late eighteenth century. The use of varied hatching techniques creates a sense of volume and depth within the oval, while the surrounding decorative border provides a structured, formal presentation. Such engravings were frequently produced for the front matter of literary collections or biographies, serving to introduce the reader to the author through a combination of realistic portraiture and symbolic iconography. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the decorative elements are characteristic of the period's aesthetic, which favoured order, symmetry, and classical references in both fine art and book production.
