A formal seventeenth-century engraving of Frederik III, King of Denmark and Norway, by the Flemish master Pieter de Jode II.
This engraving depicts Frederik III, King of Denmark and Norway, rendered with the formal precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Flemish printmaking. Pieter de Jode II, a member of a prominent family of engravers based in Antwerp, executed this portrait during a period of significant political upheaval in Northern Europe. The work relates to the events surrounding the relief of Copenhagen in 1659, a conflict that defined the monarch's reign.
The composition follows the conventions of royal portraiture. The King is presented within an oval frame, a common device in period printmaking that provides a sense of depth and focus. He wears a fur-trimmed mantle and the insignia of the Order of the Elephant, the highest Danish order of chivalry. To his side, a crown rests on a ledge, signifying his royal authority. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to model the textures of the fur, the lace collar, and the facial features of the monarch. The background features subtle cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume while keeping the focus on the subject. Below the portrait, the Latin inscription identifies the sitter and his titles, framed by the royal coat of arms. This print serves as a historical record of the visual language used to project power and legitimacy in the mid-seventeenth century. The technical skill displayed in the rendering of light and shadow demonstrates the high standards of the Antwerp school of engraving, which supplied portraits of European nobility to a wide audience across the continent.
