A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef, featuring a formal portrait of King Charles I framed by ornate botanical motifs.
This engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef depicts Charles I, King of England, framed within an elaborate cartouche. Suyderhoef, a Dutch engraver known for his technical precision, captures the monarch with a focus on the textures of his attire and the formal gravity of his expression. The portrait is surrounded by a decorative border featuring swags of fruit, wheat, and floral motifs, a common stylistic device in seventeenth-century printmaking used to elevate the status of the sitter.
The composition relies on the contrast between the central figure and the surrounding ornamentation. The king is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a ruff and a doublet adorned with the insignia of the Order of the Garter. The engraving technique demonstrates the artist's ability to render varied surfaces, from the soft curls of the hair to the metallic sheen of the jewellery and the crisp folds of the lace collar. The surrounding frame, with its dense arrangement of natural elements, provides a sense of abundance and formality.
Suyderhoef was a master of the burin, often working after paintings by contemporaries such as Frans Hals. This work reflects the conventions of royal portraiture during the mid-seventeenth century, where the sitter is presented as a figure of authority. The inclusion of the empty cartouche at the base suggests this print was intended for a wider circulation, perhaps as a commemorative image or a frontispiece. The print remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Dutch printmakers during this period, who were adept at translating the nuances of oil painting into the monochromatic medium of engraving. The work provides a window into the visual culture of the era, where the image of the monarch was carefully constructed through symbolic and decorative elements.
