An eighteenth-century engraving of Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Barbarigo, featuring formal heraldic elements and Latin biographical text.
This engraving depicts Giovanni Francesco Barbarigo (1658-1730), a prominent Venetian cardinal and Bishop of Padua. The work follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century ecclesiastical portraiture, presenting the subject within a formal oval frame. The composition is balanced by heraldic elements placed in the upper corners, which denote the subject's status and lineage within the church hierarchy.
Hieronymus Rossi employs precise line work to define the facial features and the texture of the cardinal's vestments. The shading is achieved through a system of parallel and cross-hatched lines, a technique common to the period's printmaking practices. Below the portrait, a Latin inscription provides biographical details, including his elevation to the cardinalate in 1719 and his death in 1730. The inclusion of the papal tiara and keys in the upper left coat of arms signifies his connection to the Roman Catholic Church, while the right side displays the Barbarigo family crest.
This print reflects the formal visual language used to document the lives of high-ranking clergy in the eighteenth century. It serves as a historical record of the subject's appearance and his official titles. The clarity of the engraving allows for a detailed view of the subject's expression and the decorative heraldry surrounding the central oval. Such portraits were often produced to circulate the image of a prelate among his peers and the public, reinforcing his position within the ecclesiastical structure of the time. The work is a characteristic example of the print culture that flourished in Rome under the influence of publishers like Dominicus de Rubeis, whose name appears at the base of the sheet.
