Descripción
A 1885 portrait by Paul Gauguin depicting the painter Achille Granchi-Taylor, rendered with expressive brushwork and a warm, earthy palette.
Painted in 1885, this portrait depicts the artist Achille Granchi-Taylor, a contemporary and associate of Paul Gauguin during his time in Copenhagen. The work captures the sitter in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed away from the viewer with a contemplative expression. Gauguin employs a technique characterised by visible, rhythmic brushwork that builds form through colour rather than traditional line. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, with the reddish hues of the subject's beard and hair providing a warm contrast to the cooler, shadowed background.
The composition is divided between the solid, dark mass of the subject's coat and the lighter, textured area to the right, which suggests a curtain or draped fabric. This juxtaposition creates a sense of depth while maintaining the flatness that would become more pronounced in Gauguin's later work. The application of paint is dense, showing the influence of Impressionist methods while hinting at the shift towards the symbolic and synthetic styles the artist would develop in Brittany and later in the South Pacific.
Achille Granchi-Taylor was a painter of Italian-French descent who shared Gauguin's social circles. This portrait functions as a record of their professional acquaintance during a period of transition for Gauguin, who was then struggling to establish himself as a full-time artist after leaving his career as a stockbroker. The painting remains a clear example of Gauguin's technical ability to capture personality through light and texture, avoiding the rigid formality of academic portraiture. The signature and date are visible in the lower right corner, confirming its place within his early oeuvre.

Artist Biography
Paul Gauguin
Gauguin soon rejected the Impressionist focus on objective representation, seeking instead to express subjective emotions and spiritual ideas through his art. This led him to develop a distinctive style characterised by flattened forms, simplified lines, and vibrant, non-naturalistic colours. Key works such as *Vision after the Sermon* (1888) exemplify this approach, showcasing his move towards Symbolism and Cloisonnism.
Frustrated with European society, Gauguin sought refuge in French Polynesia, where he created some of his most iconic paintings, including *Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?* (1897-98). These works depict the beauty and mystery of Tahitian life, albeit through a lens that has since been critiqued for its romanticised and colonial gaze. Despite his controversial legacy, Paul Gauguin's innovative use of colour and his exploration of primal themes profoundly influenced the development of modern art.
