A precise etching by Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart, capturing the refined details and floral ornamentation of an eighteenth-century Vincennes porcelain vase.
Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart was a master of the etching medium, particularly noted for his ability to translate the tactile qualities of decorative objects into monochrome prints. This work depicts a piece of Vincennes porcelain, a precursor to the famous Sèvres manufactory. Jacquemart utilised precise, controlled lines to capture the reflective surfaces, the delicate floral motifs painted on the ceramic body, and the sculptural relief of the applied porcelain flowers.
His technique involved a rigorous attention to light and shadow, which allows the viewer to perceive the curvature of the vessel and the specific texture of the glazed finish. The composition is balanced and formal, reflecting the nineteenth-century interest in documenting historical decorative arts. Jacquemart often collaborated with his father, Albert Jacquemart, a noted historian of ceramics, to produce illustrations for scholarly publications. This print demonstrates the high level of technical skill required to render the complex ornamentation of eighteenth-century French porcelain.
The etching process allows for a clarity that highlights the contrast between the smooth, painted panels and the ribbed, gilded sections of the vase. By focusing on the object in isolation, Jacquemart invites the viewer to examine the craftsmanship of the original ceramic piece. The work is a fine example of how printmaking was used to preserve and disseminate knowledge of historical art objects during the Victorian era. The clean lines and monochromatic palette make this a versatile piece for a variety of interior settings, offering a sophisticated look at the history of European porcelain design.
