A precise etching by Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart documenting a historical Polish saddle from the Czartoriski collection.
Jules Ferdinand Jacquemart was a master of the etching medium, particularly noted for his ability to render the textures of decorative objects with scientific precision. This work depicts a Polish saddle from the collection of Prince Czartoriski, capturing the material qualities of the leather, metalwork, and textile components that define the object. Jacquemart utilised fine, controlled lines to differentiate between the heavy, embossed leather of the saddle and the delicate, woven patterns of the accompanying fabric.
His approach to printmaking was informed by his father, Albert Jacquemart, a writer on the history of ceramics and decorative arts. The younger Jacquemart often collaborated on these publications, providing illustrations that functioned as accurate visual records for collectors and scholars. In this etching, the saddle is presented against a neutral background, allowing the viewer to focus on the specific craftsmanship of the piece. The composition is balanced, with the main saddle structure occupying the centre and a smaller accessory piece positioned to the left. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation in the presentation, ensuring that the focus remains on the structural and decorative details of the historical artefact.
Jacquemart's technique involves a sophisticated use of cross-hatching and varying line weights to suggest depth and volume. By carefully managing the density of his marks, he creates a sense of tactile reality, making the viewer aware of the weight and age of the object. This print is an example of the high level of technical skill applied to the documentation of historical collections during the nineteenth century. It serves as a record of the Czartoriski collection, providing a clear view of the craftsmanship involved in the creation of such equestrian equipment.
