A moody, atmospheric depiction of the Dutch countryside after a storm, rendered in the characteristic tonal style of the Hague School.
Jacob Maris, a leading figure of the Hague School, captures the atmospheric conditions of the Dutch countryside in this work. The painting depicts a polder, a low-lying tract of land enclosed by dikes, in the immediate aftermath of a storm. Maris employs a palette dominated by earthy tones, deep greens, and muted greys to convey the damp, heavy air characteristic of the Netherlands after rainfall.
The composition is defined by the contrast between the dark, silhouetted trees and the reflective surface of the water. The sky, which occupies a significant portion of the canvas, shows the clearing clouds with patches of lighter, yellowish tones breaking through the gloom. His brushwork is loose and expressive, prioritising the capture of light and mood over precise detail. This approach is typical of the Hague School, which sought to move away from the rigid academic traditions of the time in favour of a more direct, tonal interpretation of the natural world.
Maris was known for his ability to render the specific quality of Dutch light, often referred to as 'grey painting' for its focus on tonal values rather than bright, saturated colour. In this piece, the water acts as a mirror, reflecting the shifting sky and the surrounding vegetation. The presence of a small boat adds a sense of human scale to the vast, open environment. This work provides an example of the artist's technical skill in managing oil paint to create texture and depth, particularly in the rendering of the turbulent sky and the still, dark water. It remains a representative piece of late nineteenth-century Dutch art, reflecting the period's interest in the quiet, often melancholic beauty of the rural environment.
