A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu from the Rokkasen series, featuring the poet Otomo no Kuronushi in a classic Ukiyo-e composition.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts the poet Otomo no Kuronushi, one of the six figures celebrated in the Rokkasen series. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single composition. This technical advancement transformed the medium, moving away from the limited palettes of earlier eras.
The composition is divided into distinct zones. At the top, a cartouche contains a portrait of the poet alongside his verse. Below this, a stylised mountain form sits above a body of water. In the foreground, a figure stands on the shore, gesturing towards the distance, accompanied by a smaller attendant. The use of space is deliberate, with large areas of unprinted paper creating a sense of calm and distance. The figures are rendered with delicate lines, typical of Harunobu's approach to the human form, which often features slender proportions and graceful postures.
Harunobu often drew inspiration from classical Japanese literature and poetry. By pairing the visual representation of the poet with his written work, the print functions as a synthesis of word and image. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones to define the robes and the natural elements. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the mid-Edo period, where the appreciation of classical themes was integrated into the popular culture of the urban merchant class. The work demonstrates the precision of the woodblock carving process, where each colour required a separate block to achieve the final layered effect. The balance between the calligraphic elements and the pictorial scene is characteristic of the refined output from Harunobu's studio during this period.
