Descripción
A detailed ornithological study from John James Audubon's 'The Birds of America', featuring four nuthatches on a lichen-covered branch.
Plate 152 from the monumental publication 'The Birds of America' depicts the White-breasted Nuthatch and the Black-capped Nuthatch. John James Audubon, an American naturalist and painter, produced these life-sized studies to document the avian species of North America with scientific precision. The work features four individual birds positioned upon a central, weathered tree trunk, which is adorned with patches of lichen and hanging moss.
Audubon utilised a combination of engraving and aquatint, which was subsequently finished with hand-applied watercolour. This method allowed for the capture of fine feather textures and the subtle colour variations of the birds' plumage. The composition is characteristic of Audubon's approach, where he moved away from static, profile-based depictions common in earlier scientific texts. Instead, he presented the birds in active, naturalistic poses, showing them in flight or clinging to the bark.
The central tree trunk provides a vertical anchor for the composition, creating a sense of depth and environmental context. The muted tones of the bark and lichen contrast with the distinct blue, black, and white markings of the nuthatches. This print is a fine example of nineteenth-century natural history illustration, reflecting the period's fascination with taxonomy and the exploration of the American wilderness. The work remains a primary reference for ornithologists and art historians alike, documenting species as they appeared in their native habitats during the early nineteenth century.

Artist Biography
John James Audubon
He was born illegitimate in 1785 in Les Cayes, Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), the son of a French merchant and a Creole woman. He was sent to America at eighteen to avoid Napoleonic conscription. He was also a serial fabricator: he claimed his father was an admiral (he was a captain), said his family had been imprisoned in the Bastille (they had not), and invented frontier stories about fighting wolves and sleeping in igloos. He ran a dry-goods store in Kentucky and was jailed for bankruptcy in 1819.
The paintings themselves are extraordinary: precise, dynamic, and composed with a narrative quality that goes beyond scientific illustration. His legacy is contested. The National Audubon Society and several regional chapters dropped his name in 2023 because of his documented history as an enslaver. He died in 1851.
