A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting the preparation of an ox on a spit, rendered with precise line work.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicts a scene of communal preparation, showing an ox secured to a spit over a fire. The composition focuses on the physical labour of the figures gathered around the roasting apparatus. Hogenberg employs a precise, linear technique to define the musculature of the animal and the folds of the garments worn by the onlookers. The Latin inscription, 'BOS VARIIS ANIMALCVLIS INFARCITVS', provides context for the scene, suggesting a culinary practice of stuffing the animal with smaller creatures, a detail that reflects the elaborate banquet traditions of the sixteenth century.
The artist, active in the early sixteenth century, was known for his work in printmaking and his ability to capture complex narrative scenes within a single frame. The smoke rising from the fire is rendered with delicate, swirling lines, providing a contrast to the solid, structural forms of the wooden spit and the figures. The perspective is relatively shallow, keeping the viewer engaged with the immediate action of the roasting process. This work belongs to a series of prints that explore themes of feasting and social gathering, common subjects in the Northern Renaissance period. The attention to detail, from the ropes binding the ox to the vessels placed on the ground, demonstrates the technical skill required for early etching processes. This print offers a glimpse into the historical customs of the era, presented with a focus on the mechanics of the event rather than an idealised view of the proceedings. The monochromatic nature of the print allows the viewer to focus on the composition and the narrative elements, making it a piece of interest for those studying the history of printmaking or the social history of the sixteenth century.
