A serene oil painting by T. C. Steele capturing the rolling hills and atmospheric light of Okemo Mountain in Vermont.
Theodore Clement Steele, a prominent figure in the Hoosier Group, produced this work during his formative years of study in Munich. The painting depicts the rolling terrain of Ludlow, Vermont, capturing the specific light and atmospheric conditions of the region. Steele employs a palette dominated by earthy greens, ochres, and muted blues, reflecting the influence of the Munich School, which favoured tonal depth and realistic observation over the brighter, broken brushwork of later French Impressionism.
The composition is structured around the mass of Okemo Mountain, which occupies the upper portion of the frame. Below, the valley floor is rendered with varied brushwork that suggests the texture of grasses and foliage. A small settlement is visible in the middle distance, providing a sense of scale against the expansive hillside. The sky is filled with soft, cloud-laden formations that suggest a shifting weather pattern, a common interest for artists working in the plein air tradition.
Steele's approach here demonstrates his technical proficiency in handling oil paint to create atmospheric perspective. The foreground is defined by darker, more saturated tones, while the mountain recedes into lighter, cooler hues. This method creates a sense of physical space and distance. The work provides an example of late nineteenth-century American regionalism, where artists sought to document the character of the rural environment. By focusing on the specific topography of Vermont, Steele demonstrates his ability to translate the physical reality of a location into a coherent visual narrative. The painting remains a record of the artist's early career, showing the transition from academic training toward the more fluid, light-focused style that would define his later work in Indiana.
