A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, capturing the atmospheric scene of a rain-swept Karasaki promontory and a boat on Lake Biwa.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts the scene of Karasaki during a night rain, forming part of his series titled Eight Views of Omi. The composition draws upon a long-standing tradition in Japanese art, which adapts the Chinese theme of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers to the Omi Province surrounding Lake Biwa. Harunobu, a pioneer of the nishiki-e or brocade print, employs a refined colour palette to convey the atmospheric conditions of the evening.
The visual arrangement features a solitary, gnarled pine tree on a small promontory, a motif associated with the Karasaki site. A small shrine and torii gate sit near the water's edge, providing a sense of scale and cultural context. In the foreground, a boat with a thatched roof carries figures across the water, their forms rendered with the delicate line work characteristic of Harunobu's style. The rain is suggested through subtle, diagonal lines that cut across the upper portion of the print, obscuring the distant mountains and creating a sense of depth.
Harunobu's approach to this subject avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the mood and the interplay between the natural elements and human presence. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of the mid-eighteenth-century woodblock medium, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the specific colour gradations. The inclusion of text within a rectangular cartouche is a standard feature of the series, providing both the title and a poetic reference to the location. This work offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, where the depiction of famous sites was a popular subject for both artists and collectors. The print remains a clear example of the balance between graphic clarity and atmospheric suggestion found in Harunobu's oeuvre.
