A detailed woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro depicting a New Year celebration at a Japanese court, rendered in the traditional blown-off roof style.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro originates from the illustrated kyoka anthology titled The Young God Ebisu (Waka Ebisu), published around 1790. The composition employs the fukinuki-yatai, or blown-off roof, technique, which allows the viewer to observe the interior activities of a courtly residence from an elevated perspective. This method is a traditional convention in Japanese art, often used to depict multi-room architectural spaces simultaneously.
The scene captures a New Year celebration within a palace setting. Figures are arranged across the tatami-matted rooms and the wooden veranda, dressed in formal attire appropriate for the period. To the right, a group of men observe a rider on horseback, while other figures engage in conversation or attend to duties within the structure. The inclusion of pine branches and plum blossoms suggests the seasonal context of the New Year, a time associated with renewal and auspicious beginnings in the Japanese calendar.
Utamaro is widely recognised for his contributions to the ukiyo-e genre, particularly his portraits of women. However, this work demonstrates his ability to manage complex architectural compositions and multi-figure narratives. The print is characterised by clean lines and a balanced application of colour, typical of the high-quality book illustrations produced during the Edo period. The use of negative space, represented by the stylised clouds, helps to frame the various sections of the building, guiding the eye through the narrative flow of the scene. This print serves as a record of the aesthetic and social customs of the Japanese elite during the late eighteenth century, rendered with the precision and technical skill associated with the ukiyo-e school.
