Descripción
A 1960 abstract work by Cy Twombly, featuring gestural marks and a light palette with sharp bursts of colour.
Naples, created in 1960, belongs to a period when Cy Twombly resided in Italy, a move that shifted his artistic output towards a more Mediterranean sensibility. The work displays his characteristic fusion of drawing and painting, where the canvas acts as a field for gestural marks rather than a surface for traditional representation. Twombly employs a restricted palette of soft whites, punctuated by sudden, aggressive bursts of red, yellow, and violet. These marks, ranging from faint graphite scribbles to thick, impasto-like smears of oil paint, suggest a sense of urgency and physical presence.
The composition avoids a central focus, instead spreading its energy across the entire surface. This approach invites the viewer to scan the canvas, tracing the erratic paths of the artist's hand. The inclusion of wax crayon adds a distinct texture, creating a dialogue between the fluid application of oil and the dry, scratchy resistance of the crayon. Twombly often referenced classical mythology and literature in his titles, yet the visual content remains resolutely non-representational. The work functions as a record of the artist's physical interaction with the materials, capturing a fleeting moment of expression. By stripping away the conventions of figurative art, Twombly allows the viewer to engage directly with the raw materiality of the paint and the rhythm of the marks. This piece reflects the artist's interest in the history of the Mediterranean, filtered through a modern, abstract lens that prioritises the immediacy of the mark-making process over narrative clarity.
