A 1919 Dada work by Kurt Schwitters, combining ink and watercolour to explore fragmented forms and conceptual symbolism.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, produced this work in 1919. It reflects his interest in merging disparate elements into a cohesive visual language. The composition incorporates ink lines and watercolour washes, creating a fragmented space that characterises his early experiments with abstraction. Schwitters was known for his Merz works, which often utilised found objects, yet this piece demonstrates his technical facility with traditional media.
The imagery contains a mix of geometric shapes, including circles and triangles, alongside more figurative elements like the small profile of a head and a heart symbol. The inclusion of the number 69 and the specific title suggest a narrative or conceptual framework, typical of the artist's playful approach to meaning. The lines are varied in weight, ranging from precise ink contours to looser, hatched shading that provides texture to the surface. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft washes of pink and ochre to balance the stark black ink work.
This piece offers a glimpse into the early twentieth-century avant-garde, where artists sought to break away from traditional representation. Schwitters uses the surface of the paper to explore the relationship between text, symbol, and form. The work does not aim for realistic depiction, but rather a rhythmic arrangement of visual cues. It remains a representative example of the artist's ability to organise complex, seemingly unrelated components into a balanced whole. The work is signed with the artist's initials and dated in the lower right corner, consistent with his practice during this period.
