Descripción
A 1908 expressionist study of the Bavarian Alps by Wassily Kandinsky, featuring bold colour blocks and energetic brushwork.
Wassily Kandinsky painted this view of Murnau am Staffelsee in 1908. During this period, the artist spent significant time in the Bavarian village of Murnau, a location that prompted a shift in his approach to colour and form. This work captures the Bavarian Alps and the surrounding terrain through a lens of subjective experience rather than strict topographical accuracy.
The composition relies on bold, non-naturalistic colour choices. Deep blues define the mountain range, while the foreground and middle ground feature patches of ochre, violet, and green. Kandinsky applies paint with visible, energetic brushwork, prioritising the emotional weight of the scene over precise detail. The reflection of the terrain in the water is rendered through horizontal strokes, which break the surface into rhythmic segments. This technique suggests the influence of Fauvism, yet the application remains distinctively his own.
Kandinsky moved away from the muted palettes of his earlier work during these years in Murnau. He began to treat the canvas as a space for the arrangement of colour and shape, a process that eventually led him toward total abstraction. In this piece, the objects remain recognisable, but their boundaries are softened by the intensity of the pigment. The sky is a dark, brooding presence, contrasting with the warmer tones of the earth below. This print reproduces the texture of the original board, allowing the viewer to observe the direction and pressure of the artist's hand. It represents a moment of transition in early twentieth-century European art, where the observation of nature served as a starting point for the exploration of internal states.

Artist Biography
Wassily Kandinsky
Kandinsky's work is characterised by a profound spirituality and a desire to express inner emotions through purely abstract means. He believed that colour held a deep psychological power, capable of directly affecting the viewer's soul. Works like 'Odessa. Port' and 'Old Town II' showcase his transition from representational art towards complete abstraction, evident in his iconic 'Blue Rider' period. His time at the Bauhaus further refined his theories, exploring the relationship between art, architecture, and design.
Today, Kandinsky's pioneering spirit continues to inspire artists and art lovers alike. His vibrant, emotionally charged canvases, such as 'Comet' and 'Kochel: Waterfall I', offer a powerful antidote to the mundane, inviting us to explore the boundless possibilities of abstract expression. Owning a Kandinsky print is not just about acquiring a beautiful image; it's about embracing a revolutionary vision and celebrating the power of art to transcend the visible world.
