A refined Neoclassical drawing by Jean Grandjean featuring an allegorical monument to Amsterdam, incorporating symbols of maritime commerce and the arts.
This drawing by Jean Grandjean presents a formal, allegorical monument designed to celebrate the identity of Amsterdam. The composition is structured around a central plinth, which serves as a blank tablet for an inscription. At the base, the coat of arms of Amsterdam is displayed, complete with a crown and symbols of maritime trade, such as a trident and a caduceus. These elements ground the work in the city's historical reliance on global commerce.
Above the plinth, a female figure sits in a classical pose, holding a sword and a laurel wreath. She is flanked by putti, one of whom appears to be engaged in study, representing the intellectual pursuits of the city. The background provides context for these symbols: on the left, the masts of ships rise from the harbour, while on the right, trees and architectural hints suggest a park or urban setting. Grandjean uses a precise, controlled line to define the architectural forms, while grey wash provides volume and shadow to the figures and the stone structure.
The work reflects the late eighteenth-century interest in Neoclassical design, where allegorical figures were frequently employed to personify civic virtues and institutional identities. The symmetry of the monument and the clarity of the iconography are characteristic of the period's preference for order and didactic visual language. Grandjean, a Dutch artist who spent time in Rome, brought a refined sensibility to his draughtsmanship, evident in the delicate handling of the wash and the balanced arrangement of the various symbolic attributes. This piece functions as a study for a commemorative monument, capturing the aspirations of a city that viewed itself as a centre of both trade and culture.
