Midday (Meridies) - Johannes Visscher

A classic Dutch Golden Age etching by Johannes Visscher, depicting a serene pastoral scene of peasants and livestock resting at midday.

This etching, titled Meridies (Midday), is a fine example of the Dutch Golden Age tradition of pastoral printmaking. Johannes Visscher, a skilled engraver and etcher, executed this work after a design by Nicolaes Berchem. The composition depicts a quiet, rural scene where figures and livestock rest under the shade of trees during the heat of the day. The scene is typical of the Italianate style popular among Dutch artists of the period, who often depicted Mediterranean-inspired vistas populated by shepherds and their herds.

The technical execution demonstrates Visscher's command of line and tone. He uses varying densities of hatching to create depth and texture, from the rough bark of the trees to the soft, rounded forms of the cattle and the folds of the figures' clothing. The foreground is occupied by a group of resting peasants and animals, while the background recedes into a mountainous horizon, suggesting a vast, open space. The inclusion of a cart and a dog adds a sense of lived-in reality to the scene, grounding the pastoral ideal in the practicalities of rural life.

Johannes Visscher was part of a prominent family of engravers in Amsterdam. His work often involved translating the paintings of contemporaries into prints, allowing for a wider dissemination of their compositions. This particular print captures the stillness of a summer afternoon, with the light rendered through the careful application of line rather than colour. The balance between the human figures and the animals reflects the harmonious relationship between man and nature often explored in seventeenth-century Dutch art. This print offers a window into the aesthetic preferences of the era, where the depiction of rural life was a subject of significant interest for collectors and art enthusiasts alike.
