A chiaroscuro print by the comte de Caylus, reproducing a drawing from the Crozat collection, featuring the Madonna and Child with saints.
This print is an example of the technical experimentation common in the eighteenth century, specifically the use of the chiaroscuro woodcut technique to replicate the appearance of wash drawings. Anne Claude Philippe de Thubières, comte de Caylus, was a significant figure in French intellectual circles, known for his interest in archaeology and the reproduction of Old Master drawings. This work is part of a larger project intended to document the contents of the Crozat collection, one of the most important private art collections in Paris at the time.
The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, surrounded by various saints. The figures are arranged within an arched architectural space, suggesting a classical setting. The artist employs a monochromatic palette, using varying tones of brown to create depth and shadow, mimicking the effect of ink washes on paper. The lines are precise, reflecting the etcher's skill in translating the original drawing by Pierre de Pietri into a reproducible print format. The inclusion of text at the bottom provides provenance, noting that the original drawing was held in the cabinet of Monsieur Crozat and that the etching was executed by the comte de Caylus, with the woodcut blocks prepared by Nicolas Le Sueur.
This print demonstrates the collaborative nature of printmaking during the period, where different specialists contributed to the final output. The work serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the French aristocracy, who valued the study and dissemination of Italian Renaissance and Baroque compositions. The balanced arrangement of the figures and the soft, tonal transitions provide a clear view of the original draughtsmanship, making it a valuable object for those interested in the history of print reproduction and the circulation of art historical knowledge in the eighteenth century.
